Kathryn “Kat” Cammack by Charlotte Hays | January 26, 2021 "Our values truly have the potential to become a distant memory in the history books. It is imperative for us to join in this fight not for Republican or Democratic ideas, but for the actual soul of America." Read About Rep. Kathryn "Kat" Cammack Takeaways "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored." - Aldous Huxley Higher Ed Fact. The real winners of student loan forgiveness are predatory universities. Universities get paid upfront, leaving students with high debt burdens and taxpayers stuck with the bill. This system encourages predatory behavior, like accepting students who are unlikely to graduate. Universities should have skin in the game with regard to their graduates’ success. We should draw down government backing for student loans, and allow private lenders who will actually look at the value of a degree restore accountability. By: Inez Feltscher Stepman Foreign Affairs Fact. There is no replacement for America leadership Since victory in World War II, America has served as leader of the free world, forstering an era of relative peace and rising prosperity around the globe. In his quest to make America great again, Trump was — whether he said it or not — reasserting America’s role as leader and bulwark of the free world. If America falters, there is no backup, no equivalent democratic superpower waiting in the wings. By: Claudia Rosett Elections Fact. Presidential elections are never finalized on Election Day The day that citizens cast their ballots (or the end of the voting period) is only one step in our process of electing a president. When Americans vote for presidential candidates, we are actually voting for electors from our state who go on to vote in the Electoral College in December of the presidential election year. The process of certifying vote totals can take a long time, especially in close races. Voters should be prepared to wait for a final outcome, if need be. By: Staff Community Fact. We need to increase the number of beat cops Police maintain public order and safety, enforce laws, and prevent and investigate crime. Studies show that the mere presence of additional officers in a neighborhood can reduce crime. Reducing the number of cops on the street and slashing police budgets will leave minorities, who are disproportionately victimized by violent crime, in an even more vulnerable position. Americans of all colors understand this and want more police officers, not fewer, in their neighborhoods. Police officers need better training and reforms that reduce officer fatigue . By: Patrice Onwuka Energy Fact. The United States is a leader in creating a clean environment Americans have commuted less in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. But even absent this trend, U.S. emissions have decreased dramatically down to around their 1980 levels thanks to a combination of renewable energy and cleaner traditional energy sources. This is the largest absolute decline among all countries since 2000. The United States has also worked to “clean up” more traditional power sources with the result that power plants have much reduced emissions of mercury, sulfur dioxide and nitrous oxide. By: Charlotte Whelan Health Fact. Our system is over-regulated Prior to the pandemic, there were many rules in place that made health care more bureaucratic, slow and expensive. States and the federal government acted swiftly to get rid of unnecessary red tape (e.g., the recognition of medical licenses across state lines, the expansion of telehealth) with no impact on patient care. This suggests that many regulations in health care were never needed in the first place. One solution is to make COVID-19 deregulatory changes permanent to foster flexibility and lower costs. By: Hadley Heath Manning View More Takeaways Sign the Petition Protect Women's Sports. Demand Fair Play. Single-sex sports allow females to compete on a level playing field. But the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County, and President Joe Biden’s recent decision to apply that ruling to Title IX, jeopardizes that progress. Under Bostock and Biden’s Executive Order, schools will be REQUIRED to let biological male athletes play on women’s teams and compete against female athletes.
